Senegal: the main headliners of the local elections

In Senegal, after two weeks of campaigning, more than 6.6 million voters are called to the polls to renew the mandates of mayors and departmental councilors, in place since 2014. Beyond local issues, these elections will be a test to test the popularity of political leaders.

He is often described as the "

first opponent

" to Macky Sall.

Ousmane Sonko, who came third in the 2019 presidential election, is embarking on the battle for the town hall of Ziguinchor, in Casamance, the opportunity to consolidate – or not – his political ambitions at the national level.

In Dakar, the majority is betting on the Minister of Health, Abdoulaye Diouf Sarr.

Opposite, six competitors including Barthélémy Dias, supported by the former mayor of the capital, Khalifa Sall.

But the one who succeeded him at the town hall, Soham El Wardini, hopes to keep his chair.

Also in the running, Doudou Wade, figure of the PDS and nephew of the former president, Abdoulaye Wade.

In the family of President Macky Sall, Mansour Faye, his brother-in-law.

He is a candidate for Saint Louis and notably faces another member of the majority, the former minister, Mary Teuw Niane.

In Guédiawaye, in the suburbs of Dakar, the little brother of the head of state, Aliou Sall, is a candidate for re-election.

Personalities from civil society are also trying the adventure like Fadel Barro, former leader of the Y'en a Marre movement, for the town hall of Kaolack.

The press boss Bougane Guèye Dany, for his part, saw his candidacy invalidated for the city of Dakar, but is seeking the town hall of Mermoz Sacré Cœur, one of the municipalities of the capital.
