NATO countries have been showing Moscow their support for Ukraine in recent weeks.

Canada has granted a loan of 120 million Canadian dollars (84.3 million euros) to Kiev to support the country's economy against a backdrop of international fears of a Russian invasion.

"Russia is seeking to destabilize Ukraine, particularly economically," Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Friday, adding that "this loan will help support Ukraine's economic resilience."

He explained at a press conference that this financial loan had been requested by Ukraine.

Trudeau asks Putin for a "meaningful dialogue"

The two countries are currently discussing "possible loan conditions and timing", according to a statement from the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The head of the Canadian government also urged Russia once again to “defuse the situation” and to “engage in a meaningful dialogue”.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed this Canadian aid on Twitter and recalled that “a strong Ukraine [was] the key to European security”.

"Canada is once again demonstrating the true commitment to the privileged partnership between our two countries," he added.

Heightened tensions with Moscow

After talks Friday on the Russian-Western crisis around Ukraine, which still threatens to degenerate, the Russians and the Americans have an appointment next week.

Tensions have increased in recent months around Ukraine.

Kiev and Moscow have been at loggerheads since Russia's 2014 annexation of the Ukrainian Crimean peninsula, followed by a war in eastern Ukraine with pro-Russian separatists (more than 13,000 dead) whose Kremlin is considered, despite his denials, as the military godfather.
