At least 29 people died on the night of Wednesday January 19 to Thursday January 20 in Monrovia, the capital of Liberia, during a crowd movement during a Christian religious gathering, police said.

"We fear that 29 people are dead," police spokesman Moses Carter told an AFP correspondent.

"Their death is confirmed," he told the correspondent who asked him to clarify his point.

"Among them are children who took part in this crusade", the name given to this kind of gathering, he said.

Injured in critical condition

The official added that the toll of the drama was likely to increase.

"The number (of deaths) could increase because other people are in critical condition," he said.

The reasons for the tragedy are unknown.

Confirmed information about the circumstances is sketchy.
