The Ministry of Agriculture announced on Thursday that more than a million additional animals, mainly ducks, must be slaughtered within three weeks to "sanitize" the South West region as bird flu spreads more and more.

More than a million additional animals, mainly ducks, must be slaughtered to "sanitize" the South West region where bird flu is spreading rapidly, the Ministry of Agriculture announced on Thursday.

The authorities want that, within three weeks, there will be no more ducks or chickens on the farms in an area mainly covering the south of the Landes, but also the west of the Gers and the north of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques.

These slaughters should bring to 2.5 million the total number of animals euthanized since the beginning of the epizootic at the end of November.
