Europe's largest economy recorded 112,323 additional cases and 239 deaths over the past day, said the Robert Koch health watch institute.

This is the first time the threshold of 100,000 cases per day has been exceeded since the daily census.

The one-week incidence rate also reached 584.4 infections per 100,000 people, according to the institute.

This record number of cases comes as the Omicron variant has become the majority in Germany, where it is responsible for more than 70% of new infections.

In this country, some 300,000 daily cases have been recorded in recent days.

Faced with the rise in contamination, the German government has restricted access to bars and restaurants to people who have received a third dose of vaccine or who present a negative test in addition to a certificate of vaccination or recovery.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz wants to introduce compulsory vaccination against Covid-19 in Germany – where 60 million out of 83 million inhabitants are fully vaccinated – but the adoption of the measure has been delayed, in a climate overheated by existing restrictions.

Demonstrations, sometimes with excesses, bring together hundreds or thousands of people almost daily against the compulsory vaccination project.

“For my part, I think it is necessary and I will actively push for it,” Mr Scholz told parliament last week during his first question and answer session as chancellor.
