The chairman of the Junge Union, Tilman Kuban, has asked the former President of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, Hans-Georg Maassen, to leave the CDU.

"This man has no place in the CDU," said Kuban on Tuesday, according to a preliminary report in the "Spiegel" top-level discussion.

Maassen should leave the party himself, “if he really cares about the CDU”.

If necessary, there must be a party exclusion procedure, even if this is always a lengthy process.

At the same time, Kuban spoke out in favor of appointing the former incumbent Chancellor Angela Merkel as honorary chairwoman of the CDU: "Anyone who has led Germany so successfully for 16 years deserves it."

The CDU leadership had distanced itself from Maassen a week ago.

In a unanimous vote, the federal board distributed vaccination-critical postings in online networks.

After the meeting, General Secretary Paul Ziemiak did not want to follow the suggestion made by Saarland Prime Minister Tobias Hans to ask Maassen to leave the party.

The South Thuringian CDU put Maassen up as a direct candidate for the federal elections in April.

The nomination had also caused resentment within the party.

Critics within the party accused him of not clearly enough distinguishing himself from right-wing positions and of deliberately stirring up resentment.

In the September election, however, Maassen missed out on entering the Bundestag.
