Dune

, an adaptation of Franck Herbert's science fiction novel, was released in cinemas last September to great success.

In 1974, the Franco-Chilean Alejandro Jodorowsky, who had signed two psychedelic works,

El Topo

(1970) and

The Sacred Mountain

(1973), also set about providing an adaptation.

But this one, which was to last between ten and fifteen hours, will never see the light of day.

Of this crazy project, there remains a book.

A coveted work that is built like a logbook.

We see the dialogues, legends, characters, but also the sets and vehicles, with drawings signed Moebius, recalls

Le Figaro

.

Estimated between 25,000 and 35,000 euros, this augmented storyboard was finally acquired for 2.6 million euros last November by the crypto collective called SpiceDAO.

On Saturday, the latter revealed his project on Twitter.

And it is surprising.

We won the auction for €2.66M.

Now our mission is to:

1. Make the book public (to the extent permitted by law)

2. Produce an original animated limited series inspired by the book and sell it to a streaming service

3. Support derivative projects from the community pic.twitter .com/g4QnF6YZBp

Dozens of copies

In its message, the collective first announces that it wants to "make the book public (as far as the law allows it)".

Problem.

The first response under the tweet is scathing: “This book has been freely available online and in full for years.

»

Moreover, the physical book purchased by the collective is not unique.

There are about ten copies around the world.

A copy sold for $42,500 three years ago, reports Phonandroid.

An amount disproportionate to the millions sold by SpiceDAO.

No rights to Jodorowsky's work

The collective also wants to "produce an original animated limited series inspired by the book and sell it to a streaming service" and "support spin-off projects from the community".

However, owning a copy of a book – rare or unique – does not give the right to adapt this work.

It is necessary to have previously acquired the rights, which is not the case of the collective.

If he wants to create an animated series, he will have to put his hands in his pocket.

The only right SpiceDAO has obtained is ownership of the physical copy of Jodorowski's work and to use it collectively, Numerama says.

One could imagine that the collective would allow the public to consult the work on certain occasions.

It was the ConstitutionDAO project that had wanted to obtain one of the few copies of the American Constitution to circulate it.
