On the proposal of the President of the Republic, the Congolese Parliament proceeded on January 7, 2022 to the modification of article 157 of the Constitution in force since 2015;

extending the state of emergency period from 20 to 90 days.

The opposition disputes this and sees it more as a power-building provision.

Yesterday, Saturday January 15, during a press conference, in front of an audience of activists, the opponent Jean Itadi of the African Congress for Progress (CAP) denounced the new provisions of the Constitution: "

I fear that they

(the leaders)

do not use this exceptional regime to quell the opposition.

The Congo is in danger.

He already was.

More than ever, the power can use any opportunity to arrest, search, punish and lock up

,” he said.

“

What has been done is criminal

”

A concern that Jean Itadi hammered home to journalists: “

Already, today in almost normal times we see the number of people who disappear in police stations.

You believe that it is in the case of an exceptional regime that people will find their children.

What has been done is criminal.

There is no advantage for me

 ,” he insisted.

Contacted, a government source told RFI that the amendment to this article of the Constitution was timely.

For her, the opposition has no objective reason to worry.
