The president of the Xunta and the PP of Galicia, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, presided over this Saturday the central act of homage to Manuel Fraga in his homeland, the town of Vilalba in Lugo.

Just on the day that marks the 10th anniversary of the death, at the age of 89, of the former Galician president and founder of the PP, they wanted to remember his key figure in the Transition and in the history of Galician autonomy.

The event was held in front of Fraga's bust, located in Vilalba's Plaza de la Constitución, in front of his birthplace, and was attended by a broad representation of the Galician PP, although the Popular Party's Deputy Secretary for Participation,

Jaime de Olano

, he was the only state representative of the party that the honoree founded in 1989.

Among the Galician leaders there was no lack of the provincial president of the PP of Lugo,

Elena Candia

; the president of the party in Vilalba,

Sandra Vázquez

; the president of the Parliament of Galicia,

Miguel Santalices

; the spokesman for the PP parliamentary group,

Pedro Puy

; the territorial delegate of the Xunta in Lugo,

Javier Arias

; or the three former mayors of the PP in Vilalba in democracy -currently the PSOE governs-.

Feijóo placed a wreath with the Galician flag at the foot of the bust and vindicated the legacy of his political mentor, from whom he inherited the leadership of the party in Galicia in 2006.

He referred to the great responsibility and "enormous pride" that taking the witness meant for him and defended that managing his legacy "does not fit in a tweet" and "does not fit in the frivolity that prevails in national politics today."

"The PP is the common house"

The tribute served to remember his career and political imprint and to ensure that the Galician PP continues with the "same vocation of the party's founder", that is, "Galicia above all".

And to vindicate his figure against the parties that "want to import pro-independence drifts into our autonomy," in a veiled allusion to the BNG.

In this context, Feijóo assured, the PP will continue defending the Spanish and European Galicia in which Fraga believed, advancing for an open and unapologetic community, believing in a modern land and broadening its bases.

"We are going to continue betting on Galicia", added Feijóo, supported by deputies and political officials of his party.

Speaking in a state key, he also defended his legacy of "union" at a time when "some parties want to divide our country" and recalled that, since its foundation, "the PP is the common home of the natural majority in Spain", the "guarantee of calm reformism".

Feijóo also highlighted the importance of Fraga as a "fundamental figure" in Spanish politics as the founder of the great center-right party in Spain and one of the fathers of the Constitution that "brought freedom, well-being and equality to the country."

It should not be forgotten that Fraga was also Minister of Information and Tourism, Vice President of the Government and Minister of the Interior during the Franco regime.

Vilalba, "everything started here"

The Galician

baron

of the PP expressed his "pride" for the work of the founding president and pointed out that "the PP of Vilalba is the most important in Spain", because "everything started here", from the hand of a Fraga who highlighted his " extraordinary and gigantic capacity for work" and his intellectual capacity and training.

Manuel Fraga was also the leader who presided over the Xunta for the longest time, although Feijóo is on the verge of equaling his record, since in July 2020 he was elected president of the Xunta de Galicia for the fourth time, just the same mandates that led the passed away.

During his 16 years in office, as Feijóo pointed out, all the statutory institutions were developed, Galicia gained national and international prestige, the term cordial bilingualism was coined in the Linguistic Normalization Law and it made Galicians abroad feel more Galician .

The Xacobeo also gained prestige from his hand, the transmission of skills such as health and education was consolidated and the foundations were laid for the arrival of the AVE to Galicia, an event that happened this winter.
