The fate of two women who jumped into drug trafficking in Vietnam to earn VND5 million (about 260,000 won) was mixed.

The two were arrested for drug possession before they were paid, but only one was sentenced to death.

On the 10th local time, Vietnamese media Thu Oi Tri reported that the trial of Thai Phuong Thuy and Tantao Nguyen, who were arrested on charges of possessing and distributing drugs, was held at the People's Court of Ho Chi Minh City.

The court sentenced Thuy to death, but Nguyen was sentenced to life in prison.

It was because Nguyen's children were under 36 months of age.

Last October, police raided the house of Thuy and Nguyen and found several plastic bags of drugs.

Research shows that plastic bags contain over 995 grams of ketamine and more than 3.5 kilograms of MDMA, commonly known as ecstasy.

During the police investigation, Thuy and Nguyen stated that they had been instructed to store drugs by drug buyer A.

The two women received drugs from an unidentified man on A's behalf and kept them in their apartment.

Mr. A promised to give Thuy and Nguyen 5 million VND if they kept the drugs and delivered them, but before they could receive the money, they were caught by the police and arrested as current offenders of drug possession.

In fact, Thuy and Nguyen did not know much about the drug buyer, Mr. A, so it was difficult to track Mr. A, and it is known that the local police have not been able to catch Mr. A to this day.

At the trial, Thuy pleaded for leniency, saying, "This is the first time I have participated in drug transport," but the court sentenced Thuy to death, saying, "I sincerely confessed and repented, but the amount of drugs caught is so large that a corresponding sentence is needed." I did.

On the other hand, the court sentenced Nguyen to life in prison, taking into account that she was raising a child under 36 months after she separated from her husband, and that she had engaged in drug trafficking to earn child support.

Vietnam, which has one of the most stringent drug laws in the world, is punishable by death for possessing more than 600 grams of heroin or 2.5 kilograms of methamphetamine.

Despite these strict drug laws, drug distribution continues to take place in Vietnam, and in December of last year, two Taiwanese foreigners who illegally transported 606 kg of drugs were sentenced to death.
