A video of a citizen punishing the perpetrator with a fist has been released amid a hate crime against an elderly Asian in California, USA.

According to foreign media such as Fox News on the 12th local time, a black man knocked down an Asian old man in Chinatown, Oakland, California on the afternoon of the 10th.

CCTV footage released by Auckland Police shows a black man walking down the street while talking on the phone, discovering an old man of Asian descent in front of him and hastening his steps.

The man behind the old man pushed the old man on the back as he approached the corner, and the old man carrying the shopping cart lost his focus and fell to the floor.

A citizen who saw this followed the perpetrator and threw a punch.

The perpetrator, who was hit in the head by a fist swung by a citizen, stumbled violently and dropped the cell phone he was holding.

The citizen who punished the perpetrator told ABC News: "I hit him reflexively without thinking. I don't think my actions were right."

When local police arrived at the scene, both the perpetrator and the victim who pushed the old man had disappeared.

The police released a CCTV video of the situation at the time and urged them to report the identity of the perpetrator and the elderly victim.

Police said, "The perpetrator is a black male around the age of 35, and they are being pursued on charges of assault and elder abuse.

Hate crimes against Asians have been on the rise across the United States since the COVID-19 outbreak.

According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), there were 279 hate crimes of Asian origin in the United States in 2020, a 77% increase from the previous year (158).

In Auckland's Chinatown, where the incident occurred, crimes targeting Asian descent continue.

In April last year, Carl Chan, director of Auckland's Chinatown Chamber of Commerce, was hit in the head while walking down the street.

In October of last year, a black passenger struck an elderly Asian passenger with a cane.
