7 dead, 45 injured in Indian express train derailment

An express train in West Bengal, India, derailed. Several Indian media, including New Delhi TV and Press Trust of India (PTI), reported on the evening of the 13th that at least seven people were killed and 45 injured in the accident.

The report quoted railway sources as saying that many passengers were trapped in the derailed carriages, so rescue services used gas cutters to cut through the damaged carriages.

Footage from the scene of the accident showed people being rescued from damaged train carriages, which were lying haphazardly on the elevated tracks.

Police and local people can be seen at the scene participating in rescue operations.

The railway sector was also involved in the rescue effort.

A passenger described the situation to PTI at the time of the incident: "(At the time) we felt a sudden violent vibration. We were all shaking violently, and the luggage on the top bunk was also rolling around." (Author: Wu Yuanchun)
