“What we are doing now is working with the Germans, with the European Union in order to slow down their consideration of the implementation of the pipeline,” Nuland told RIA Novosti during a briefing at the US State Department.

She noted that the German government has already taken significant steps towards this.

Nuland also stressed that Germany has confirmed its readiness to block the gas pipeline project in the event of a "Russian aggression" against Ukraine.

Earlier, Ukrainian Ambassador to Germany Andriy Melnyk said that European countries need to abandon the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, and called this step part of "tough preventive measures against Moscow."

German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock said that Nord Stream 2 does not yet meet EU requirements, which is the reason for the suspension of the certification process.

On November 16, it became known that the German regulator had suspended the certification of Nord Stream 2 AG as an independent gas pipeline operator.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Pankin said that the certification of Nord Stream 2 could drag on until the summer of 2022.
