Today, Wednesday, the United Nations affirmed its commitment to support a civilian-led government as an ultimate goal for the transitional phase in Sudan, after the UN mission announced the launch of consultations to resolve the political crisis, amid calls for mass demonstrations tomorrow.

The United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNAMIS) said in a statement regarding the political process consultations in the country that the United Nations is committed, in accordance with its mandate, to support a civilian-led government as an ultimate goal for the transitional phase, stressing that the mission will work with all actors to develop a comprehensive process that can lead to consensus on the path of transition. The statement stressed that the United Nations has no position regarding the outcome of this operation, which will be guided by the opinions of the Sudanese, and that it will contribute to designing the next steps for the operation.

The statement emphasized that UNTAMIS stands ready to facilitate additional steps to be taken at a later stage as needed.

The United Nations counts - according to the statement - on the full cooperation of all parties to create an appropriate atmosphere for consultations, including "an immediate end to violence against demonstrators, holding perpetrators of violence accountable, and preserving human rights."

The head of the mission, Volker Peretz, announced on Monday the start of individual preliminary consultations with all parties with the aim of resolving the political crisis, which expanded after the resignation of Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdok.

On another topic, Peretz said in a tweet on Twitter that "the attacks on health care facilities in Sudan must stop immediately."

This came after the World Health Organization expressed concern over the reporting of 15 attacks on health care workers in Sudan since November 2021.

The organization stated that most of the attacks come in the form of physical assault, obstruction, violent searches, psychological threats and intimidation, in addition to military raids on health care facilities.

British invitation

For her part, Britain's ambassador to the United Nations, Barbara Woodward, called on the UN Security Council to provide full support for the consultations launched by Peretz.

"We believe that with the recent developments in Sudan, the possibility of achieving democracy has become completely suspended," Woodward told reporters at United Nations Headquarters.

On the level of the popular movement, the resistance committees in the state of Khartoum announced the cancellation of the demonstrations that were scheduled today and postponed to tomorrow, Thursday, after the authorities announced the closure of two bridges in the capital, Khartoum, yesterday.

In turn, the Sudanese Professionals Association called in a statement today to participate in tomorrow's demonstrations under the title "Millionism of January 13th", in order to continue the processes of total change desired and to complete the goals of the revolution and building the civil state, as he put it.

These demonstrations come in light of the efforts made by the East African Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and its presentation of an initiative to facilitate dialogue between all parties to find a radical solution to the crisis.

Since last October 25, Sudan has witnessed protests in response to measures taken by the army chief, Abdel-Fattah Al-Burhan, most notably the imposition of a state of emergency, the dissolution of the Sovereignty Councils and the transitional ministers, the dismissal of Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdok (before agreeing with him to return to head the government and his resignation after that), and the arrest of officials and politicians.
