Lars Findsen, head of the Danish Intelligence Service (FE), is currently in custody on suspicion of having leaked top secret information.

Exactly what kind of information is involved is still unclear.

Findsen, who has been in charge since 2015, denies the accusations but was remanded in custody on Monday.

- This is complete madness, he said in the courtroom then.

Prime Minister: Have confidence

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen spoke about the case to the Danish media.

There is concern in Denmark that the situation will damage the Danish intelligence service's international collaborations.

According to the Prime Minister, however, her confidence in FE is still intact.

- This is something that our intelligence activities must handle when we talk about cooperation with our allies.

I have faith that it is handled in the right way, she says.

Several scandals

In recent years, several media revelations concerning the Danish intelligence service have shaken Denmark.

SVT Nyheter has, among other things, together with Danmarks Radio revealed that the American NSA has spied on politicians in Sweden and in other countries with the help of FE.

In December, the defense and police intelligence services, FE and PET, had meetings with several managers of Danish media houses.

There, they must have reminded the media that anyone who publishes secret information risks up to 12 years in prison.

The action has aroused sharp criticism, including from the industry organization Danske Medier, as it has been interpreted by many as a disguised threat with the aim of stifling reporting in the cases.
