In a statement on Wednesday evening, Petter Palmgren, at the avalanche forecast service at the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, issued the warning.

“Both the Swedish and Norwegian avalanche forecasting services warn of major avalanche danger in most of their regular avalanche forecasting areas.

That it is now so avalanche dangerous is due to persistent strong winds and large amounts of precipitation.

The storm Gyda hits the mountain range

This severe storm, "Gyda", affects the Scandinavian mountain range about as much everywhere, but somewhat less in the northernmost part ", writes Petter Palmgren.

There are therefore good reasons to assume that it is avalanche-dangerous even outside and between ordinary Swedish avalanche forecast areas from Jämtland and north, according to Palmgren.

"Because of this, we advise against staying in, or near, steeper mountain terrain in general and in particular around slopes that slope to the north via east to south."

Also warns about the weekend

The warning applies to the mountain areas of Southern and Northern Norrland during Thursday the 13th and Friday the 14th of January.

"We also assess that the avalanche danger is increased even during the weekend of 15 and 16 January and call for continued caution," writes Petter Palmgren, the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency's avalanche forecast service.
