Ten people died Sunday and Monday in floods after torrential rains in the southeastern Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, local authorities said yesterday.

And the authorities warned of the risk of new deadly floods in the state, which witnessed Saturday the collapse of a rocky massif that killed 10 people on a boat in a tourist lake.

The Civil Defense Department of Minas Gerais said 10 people died Sunday and Monday in floods and landslides.

Among the victims were five members of the same family, two of whom were three and six-year-old children, who died when their car was covered in mud following a landslide in the town of Brumadinho.

Since the start of the rains in early October, 19 people have died in the state due to the floods, while more than 17,200 others have been forced to flee their homes, and 145 of the 853 municipalities in Minas Gerais have been forced to declare a state of emergency.

Experts attribute the heavy rains to the South Atlantic Convergence Zone, which occurs during the southern hemisphere summer when a wet corridor of the Amazon converges with cold air masses from the south.

Brazil suffered human and material losses during the past two months due to severe floods, especially in the northeastern state of Bahia in late December.
