Today, Sunday, the local currency in Yemen witnessed a new deterioration against the main foreign currencies in the areas under the control of the government.

Banking sources in the city of Taiz (southwest) told Anadolu Agency that the Yemeni riyal recorded a significant deterioration by 1220 riyals to the dollar in Sunday's transactions.

She added that this deterioration came after the riyal recorded an increase of 870 riyals to the dollar in late December.

It was the lowest level recorded by the local currency in early December, when it amounted to 1700 riyals per dollar.

The government called for the need to take all measures related to monetary and financial policies to stop the deterioration of the currency rate, including the supply of all revenues, aid and resources to the Central Bank, and the control of exchange rate manipulators.

Before the war in Yemen in 2015, the average price of the dollar was 215 riyals.

The decline in the currency price led to protests in several Yemeni cities, and popular demands for the need to address the Yemeni riyal crisis, amid warnings of widespread hunger and poverty.
