Several people were injured this Saturday in Tirana when hundreds of followers of the former prime minister and former leader of the opposition Democratic Party (PD), Sali Berisha,

tried to storm the headquarters of that formation to expel its current president, Lulzim Basha

, in a fight internal that takes weeks.

Armed with iron levers, stones and hammers, Berisha's followers smashed glass, destroyed doors and windows, and gained access to the first floor of the building.

From inside,

Basha's followers responded with irritating gases

and all kinds of objects they had on hand.

After more than an hour of violent protest and at the request of Basha

, special police forces dispersed Berisha's supporters

with tear gas.

Some deputies locked in the building have breathing problems due to tear gas, according to local press.

Berisha and Basha accuse each other of inciting violence.

With less than 800 followers, "

Berisha intends to take the PD violently to impose his interests

and use it as a refuge for himself and his family," the PD said in a statement.

Instead, according to Berisha, the protesters seek to turn Basha's "bunker" into "her home of freedom."

The United States, the European Commission and

several European embassies in Albania strongly condemned the violence

and requested that those responsible be brought to justice.

Deep crisis

The "uprising" of the 23-year leader of the PD comes in response to his expulsion from the parliamentary group by Basha, his successor at the head of the party,

who acted under pressure from the United States

.

The Washington government had declared Berisha and his entire family persona non grata last May, considering him corrupt and a danger to the democracy of his country.

Following his expulsion, Berisha launched a campaign to regain control of the party and

accuses Basha of being hostage to the Socialist Prime Minister, Edi Rama

.

The largest Albanian opposition force is thus in the deepest crisis since its formation in 1990.
