A year ago, SVT revealed that one of the world's largest mobile distributors was singled out in a scam that has been described as the largest to hit Sweden.

The Swedish Tax Agency claimed that the company Brightstar "had been involved in a VAT fraud in a predetermined chain of players" and that it "realized or at least should have realized this" - and demanded the company a quarter of a billion in missing VAT.

Brightstar started its own investigation and shut down an employee pending the results.

After the investigation, the employee who had done business with one of the central companies in the mobile looting - Jolumar, whose owner was later sentenced to a long prison sentence for serious economic crimes, was fired.

"Completely sanctioned"

However, the employee appointed by Brightstar did not accept the dismissal, but chose to sue Brightstar before the Labor Court through the trade union Unionen.

In its lawsuit, the Union claims that the business plan was "decided and completely sanctioned - certified and approved" by managers at several levels, and that the dismissal was therefore incorrect.

The union's lawyer David Hellman believes that Brightstar chose not to investigate the managers' responsibilities.

- They have chosen to aim the spotlight at this member and try to find a scapegoat.

Damages - with uncertain prospects

During the year, Brightstar declared its Swedish company bankrupt with direct reference to the Swedish Tax Agency's giant demands, and no one from the company wanted to respond to the Union's demands.

Neither the bankruptcy trustee nor the organization Swedish Trade wanted to respond.

AD has therefore decided the case through a so-called third-party judgment where Brightstar is now sentenced to pay the former employee damages totaling SEK 765,000, something that was first noticed by the news agency Siren.

The fact that Brightstar's Swedish company has gone bankrupt makes it very uncertain whether the fired employee will receive any money.

SVT has unsuccessfully sought Brightstar for a comment.

Both Brightstar and the fired employee have denied all allegations of crime.

During the year, the Brightstar Group changed its name to Likewize.
