Good evening,

Frankfurt mourns the loss of Trude Simonsohn, Holocaust survivor and honorary citizen since 2016.

Her parents were murdered by the National Socialists, she survived Auschwitz, decided after the war for a future in the land of the perpetrators, came to Frankfurt in 1955 to set up the "Central Welfare Office for Jews in Germany" with her husband.

In her later years she kept telling students about her fate;

a contemporary witness without any hatred.

She was the first woman to have made Frankfurt an honorary citizen.

Last year she celebrated her 100th birthday in the Christian-Jewish Henry and Emma Budge home in Frankfurt. Mayor Peter Feldmann paid tribute to Trude Simonsohn, who died on Thursday, with the words, “That she gave our country, our city a second chance after everything we did to her and her family, is an incomprehensible gift for me to this day ". The chairman of the board of directors of the Jewish community, Salomon Korn, said, "It is difficult to put into words how much we will miss Trude". Meron Mendel, the director of the Anne Frank educational institution, wrote on Twitter that he had never known such a “strong and cheerful person”.

Hans Riebsamen, who, as long-time FAZ editor, repeatedly met Trude Simonsohn, wrote in his obituary, “Simonsohn was worried about the growing and ever more shamelessly displayed anti-Semitism in Germany and other countries, against which she had always fought. But their commitment to a tolerant and humane society was certainly not in vain. As a contemporary witness, she opened the eyes of countless students and made them immune to injustice and inhumanity. Simonsohn's seed has sprouted. "

And in addition, the Frankfurt City School Council calls for more protection for the children and young people who return to face-to-face classes on Monday, among other things through the free provision of FFP-2 masks +++, the average inflation in Hesse last year was 3.1 Percent, in December it was, however, a significantly higher 5.4 percent +++ the Diocese of Limburg slipped into the red for the first time in 2020.

I wish you a pleasant evening

Yours Manfred Köhler
