After more than three years of closure, Maya Bay has been open to the public again since Saturday, reports the HuffPost.

This bay located in Thailand was made famous in the movie

The Beach

, starring Leonardo Di Caprio, released in 2000.

It is a white sand beach, bordered by turquoise waters, on the island of Phi Phi Leh.

Surrounded by cliffs 100 meters high, it is only accessible by boat.

In October 2018, the authorities decided to close the beach.

The latter as well as the coral reefs were damaged by mass tourism.

I think this shot gives a better idea of how many people where in Maya Bay went I went, 2 days ago.

The drop off point was an awful experience, jammed, however the beach was not impossibly crowded.

I mean, go to Poda on a holiday and you'll see what packed really means.

A supervised return of tourists

Nearly 5,000 tourists visited this beach before it closed.

The authorities have therefore decided to act to preserve biodiversity.

They even proceeded to replant corals.

"The sharks have returned, the coral reefs are growing again and the water is clear again," said Yuthasak Supasorn, governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand.

"These things show that nature heals if we give it time, and we have to work to make it the same," he added.

Tourists can therefore come back but only to walk there, swimming is still prohibited.

Only 375 people per hour can travel to the island and boats have to dock at a special jetty.

Only eight of them can be there simultaneously.
