A woman and her three-month-old baby were trampled to death by an elephant in south-eastern Zimbabwe, the National Parks Authority said on Tuesday.
The 23-year-old woman crossed paths with a herd of elephants on her way home in rural Chipinge district after visiting relatives with her baby nearby on the occasion of the New Year's Day.
Population increase in rural areas
"An elephant suddenly attacked and killed her and her baby on the spot," said Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks) spokesperson Tinashe Farawo.
The growing population in rural areas in Zimbabwe is creating conflict between humans and wildlife.
According to Zimparks, 40 people were killed in the first three quarters of 2021.
