A large number of firefighters have been fighting the flames since the fire started on Sunday.

The building contains objects of great cultural-historical value, with everything from books and photographs to art objects.

The building was completed at the end of the 19th century:

- This building is one of Cape Town's historic buildings and is located right in the center, says SVT's correspondent Johan Ripås.

South African authorities warned in advance that the fire could flare up again.

The reason is the number of carpets and wooden floors inside the parliament building.

No security staff on site

On Monday, it was established that the fire had been extinguished, but according to the BBC it will now burn again.

Emergency services are on the scene, to try again to get the fire in Parliament under control.

On Monday, there were reports that a man had been arrested, suspected of the fire in Kaptstaden.

He will not be someone who works in parliament and will be brought to justice on Tuesday.

The man is said to have been able to enter the building through a window.

According to BBC reporting, the security location should be substandard at the time of the first fire, as security personnel are not entitled to overtime and therefore not on duty.

The crime classifications are arson, burglary and theft, South African police told the BBC.
