Good evening,

the year 2022 is here - and with it the wish that everything will be a little easier.

We hope that you could welcome the New Year with confidence, wherever you celebrated - whether on vacation in Madeira or in the Rhine-Main area.

The turn of the year was calm. At least that's what the emergency services report. No major incidents. With real calm, however, what was going on in the streets on New Year's Eve still had little to do. Despite the nationwide ban on firecrackers, the Hessians let it rip properly. And that should be taken literally. In many places, rockets were blown into the sky and the old year bid farewell with loud bangers. The plastic surgeon Jan Warszawski was on New Year's Eve at the BG Unfallklinik in Frankfurt. His concern that the night could be a turbulent one because one or the other firecracker, illegally obtained on the black market, could explode too early in his hand, turned out to be incorrect. It remained relatively quiet in the emergency room.He only had to treat one firecracker injury, says the twenty-eight-year-old. The Rhein-Main editorial team has put together how a midwife from the Frankfurt community hospital as well as the police and fire brigade experienced the night and what words Prime Minister Volker Bouffier (CDU) gave the Hessians on the way.

A new chapter will also be opened at Bonames Airfield in 2022. This Monday, the city of Frankfurt will begin demolishing the refugee accommodation. The 215 refugees who were still living there in the first half of 2021 have moved to apartments or other temporary accommodation in the past few months. Up to 350 refugees were temporarily housed in Bonames. In the summer of 2020 there were some violent protests, as defects repeatedly occurred in and on the simple wooden buildings, which are actually designed for a shorter period of use. Mechthild Harting recalls the eventful history of the area that is part of the green belt. There are still no concrete plans for how things could continue on the site. The Environment Department basically wants to considerhow the built-up areas of the old airfield are to be used. "We need a development concept for the entire old airfield," said City Councilor Rosemarie Heilig. The aim is to maintain the old airfield, one of the most popular excursion destinations for Frankfurters, in all its functionality in the long term.

The Schiersteiner Hafen in Wiesbaden is also a popular excursion destination in the region. Canoeists, sailors and stand-up paddlers cavort on the water. The harbor basin itself has been tight for a few months. If you are looking for a permanent berth for your boat, you have to be prepared for a longer waiting time. There are 650 places. They are all occupied, the port is fully booked. This also applies to the 130 places in the water sports club that are reserved for members. Now the city has received an inquiry from an investor who would like to build a jetty with a total of 70 berths. According to Mayor Gert-Uwe Mende (SPD), there are many reservations about the planning. Because more berths for boats mean even more leisure traffic in the harbor basin, which is only 1,400 meters long and around 200 meters wide. And the local clubs that compete with recreational athletes for a place on the water might not like that. Our author Oliver Bock took a closer look around the harbor and points out another problem: The ailing communal school boathouse was closed a few weeks ago. The board of the rowing society Wiesbaden-Biebrich 1888 e. V. accuses the city of “long-term inactivity” and demands the immediate resumption of training in the Schiersteiner Hafen and the fastest possible new construction of the floating boathouse. The board of the rowing society Wiesbaden-Biebrich 1888 e. And in addition, the reconstruction of Paulskirche began 75 years ago +++ Patrick Lange gave his last New Year's concert as General Music Director of the Hessian State Theater in Wiesbaden +++ explains why extra tariffs for basic suppliers are not permitted for new customers.

Stay healthy,
