The protests, which broke out on Sunday, are described by protesters as a demonstration of freedom against state control, not against the virus itself.

The demonstration has been reported in several places as chaotic with clashes between police and protesters.

Refused to comply with requirements

Amsterdam had demanded to allow Sunday's protest.

Maximum 3,500 participants, 1.5 meters distance between the participants, a stationary demonstration instead of a walking march.

According to Mayor Femke Halsema, when the organizers refused to agree to these terms, there was no choice but to ban the demonstration.

- The right to demonstrate is important in Amsterdam and therefore we have made every effort to accommodate the organization, she says according to the newspaper Het Parool.

On Sunday morning, the police had mobilized a large force in the central parts of the city and have also introduced visitation zones, which gives the police the right to visit people without suspicion of crime.

At the same time, the police riot force, which was called in during the demonstration, announced a planned strike against deteriorating working conditions.

"Scandalous"

Behind Sunday's protest is the Saamen voor Nederland - Together for the Netherlands - which according to its own statement gathers 70 different groups that are critical of closures and other restrictions.

According to the umbrella organization, the fact that the demonstration was banned is proof that Dutch democracy is under threat.

- It is scandalous that the demonstration is not allowed.

We are not allowed to demonstrate, but Black Lives Matter and the climate movement did, said Michel Reijinga from the organizing group earlier.
