This Sunday, January 2 is a new day of mobilization in Sudan.

The demonstrators are back by the thousands in the streets "

in memory of the martyrs

 ".

Since General Abdel Fattah al-Burhane's coup on October 25, 53 people have been killed and hundreds more injured.

Last Thursday, five more protesters were shot dead in Khartoum, according to a pro-democracy doctors' union.

The Sudanese capital is truly crisscrossed by the military.

Security forces fire tear gas canisters to disperse the thousands of anti-coup demonstrators who converge on the presidential palace.

Since very early this morning, the security forces have blocked the bridges connecting Khartoum to its suburbs.

On the main axes of the capital, armored vehicles armed with heavy machine guns are deployed, as on every Sunday of mobilization.

Internet access has once again been cut off by the authorities, as calls to defy the massive security deployment multiply in Sudan.

On social networks, many are asking that 2022 be "

the year of the continuation of resistance

 ".

They are demanding justice for the 53 demonstrators killed since October, but also for the 250 civilians killed during the 2019 revolution.

This Sunday of mobilization will once again be scrutinized by the international community, which has repeatedly denounced an escalation in violence.

The United Nations accuses the security forces of having engaged in the rape of at least thirteen demonstrators.

For its part, the United States affirms that it is "

ready to respond to those who block the aspirations of the Sudanese people to have a civil and democratic government

 ".
