The Hessian success story could "give strength and confidence even in the current time of crisis".

Prime Minister Volker Bouffier (CDU) remembered the founding of the country 76 years ago in his New Year's address.

"The new beginning was not easy after the devastating consequences of the Second World War, but a successful country has grown out of death, suffering and ruins, which today is one of the economically strongest regions in Europe," said the Union politician on New Year's Eve.

"Just as we once managed to cope with the difficult early years with solidarity, drive and commitment, so together we will also be able to leave the corona pandemic behind." People stand together: "A country in which not hate and agitation, but respect, tolerance and willingness to help shape the way we live together."

Bouffier calls for vaccination

According to the head of government, he knows that people will have to spend an unfamiliar New Year's Eve this year as well. "It is clear to me that the corona measures can have a significant impact on your life and your everyday life. But I ask for your understanding: The rules are necessary to protect the people in our country. ”Due to the virus mutations, contrary to all hopes, it was not possible to defeat the corona pandemic in 2021. There is every reason to be cautious, but no reason to panic. "We cannot predict how the virus will develop, but we now have well-functioning protective measures such as testing and of course vaccination." Bouffier emphasized that full vaccination is the best way out of the pandemic. "I ask you: take Corona seriously and get vaccinated!"

The Prime Minister thanked the doctors and nurses: “You have been doing outstanding work around the clock for 22 months.” The police, fire brigade, the Federal Armed Forces and aid organizations also deserved the highest appreciation and thanks.

The head of government also praised the commitment of the volunteers.

Their willingness to help was particularly impressive last year, especially after the flood disaster in the Ahr Valley and in some other regions of Germany.

Bouffier wanted the Hessian success story to be continued in the new year.

"The post-war generation once showed us that even the greatest challenges under the most difficult conditions can be mastered with joint effort," he said.
