• Europe France raises a new barrier in the English Channel due to Covid

France continues its fight against omicron, but without making drastic decisions. The French Prime Minister, Jean Castex, and the Minister of Health, Olivier Veran, announced this Monday the obligation to telework three days a week, the inoculation of the third dose 3 months after receiving the last and the mandatory mask in outdoors in city centers to curb the increase in infections. Simultaneously, the Council of Ministers approved the bill that will convert the health passport into a vaccination passport, in a new attempt to put pressure on the unvaccinated population.

At a press conference to announce the new measures, Castex highlighted the "tense" health situation in the country, which on Saturday surpassed the 100,000 daily contagion barrier since the start of the pandemic for the first time.

In addition, the French 'premier' announced the limitation of indoor capacity to 2,000 people and 5,000 outdoors.

French President Emmanuel Macron, who had convened an emergency Health Council by videoconference to approve these measures immediately, finally ruled out imposing the toughest restrictions requested by Health technicians and some opposition voices.

Among the restrictions that were on the table but have finally been discarded, are a national curfew for December 31 and the delay in the opening of schools, set for January 3.

From Covid certificate to vaccination pass

After the videoconference to agree on the new measures, the Council of Ministers met in an extraordinary session to approve the bill by which the health pass will be transformed into a kind of vaccination passport, only accessible to those who have a complete vaccination schedule .

Until now, it was also worth a negative test to obtain the Covid certificate.

The text, which will be debated in Parliament on Wednesday, would enter into force on January 15 after being approved.

Leisure would be reserved exclusively for the inoculated French: the vaccination pass will be necessary to access theaters, cinemas, as well as other "leisure activities, restaurants, drinking establishments, fairs, seminars or even interregional transport", reads the project.

This new vaccination pass has not been without controversy.

In the last hours, more than 500,000 French people signed a petition on the website LesLignesBougent.org against this measure for "attacking the rule of law."

For his part, the French Prime Minister, Jean Castex, celebrated the anniversary of the vaccination campaign on his Twitter account this Monday:

"Our vaccination campaign began a year ago.

Twelve months after the first injection, almost 90% of the eligible population is fully vaccinated. We owe it to the mobilization of an entire human chain: Thank you very much! ".

Thus, the Gallic country, which registers 256 deaths from Covid in the last 24 hours, follows in the wake of other European neighbors such as Italy, Portugal or Greece, which in recent weeks have increased restrictions to 'shield' Christmas and put pressure on the unvaccinated.
