Cameroon: seven years in prison for MRC executives

Around thirty executives and activists from the MRC, Maurice Kamto's party, have been sentenced to heavy prison terms in Cameroon.
They were mainly prosecuted for insurrection and endangering the security of the State.
The Yaoundé military court delivered its verdict on Monday afternoon, the two main defendants sentenced to 7 years in prison.

Same sentence for a third accused.
The thirty other convicts receive them from 1 to 6 years in prison in their absence since they had decided to boycott the declaration of the verdict by the military court of Yaoundé.
Alain Fogué and Olivier Bibou Nissack were arrested on September 21, 2020 on the eve of an opposition demonstration during which hundreds of people were arrested.
The MRC then asked for a reform of the electoral code, but also denounced the opacity of the management of the organizational budget of the football CAN.
The condemnation of these activists and party officials also comes less than two weeks from the start of the competition ...
Their lawyers, who have always denounced political trials, announced that they would appeal.
Maurice Kamto's party is considering the political response to these condemnations, but is already declaring media silence, that is to say not to participate in any debate.
As a reminder, less than three weeks ago, another group of around 40 activists was sentenced in Douala to terms of up to 5 years in prison.
