The Dubai Health Authority has identified five reasons that permanently prohibit blood donation: cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney and liver disease, a history of cancer, a history of bleeding disorders, and a history of malaria.

May Raouf, Director of the Dubai Blood Donation Center at the Dubai Health Authority, explained that the authority also identified the reasons for the temporary postponement of the request for blood donation, including a three-year postponement for epilepsy patients until treatment, in addition to a six-month temporary postponement for those who inscribe tattoos on their bodies, and pregnant women. and lactating women, as well as those who underwent major surgeries.

Raouf stressed that donating blood has many health benefits, most notably that it helps prevent many diseases, such as heart and brain strokes, as well as works to regenerate bone marrow cells.

She stated that a single blood unit can save the lives of three people, whose health condition requires a blood transfusion, calling on community members, citizens and residents, to participate in the campaign, to provide the largest amount of blood, to save lives.

She confirmed that the center collects about 50% of the blood units at the state level, and the Dubai Blood Donation Center supplies the authority's hospitals and any private hospital in Dubai with its blood needs to meet any emergency conditions, blood-based treatments, or surgeries, and it should be noted that 36 % of the blood collected in the Dubai center goes to the Thalassemia Center, where patients require frequent blood transfusions.

She pointed out that the authority had recently introduced a new technology to the Dubai Blood Donation Center, which prevents errors in drawing blood samples from donors. Microorganisms on platelet units, which ensure the safety of these units by disrupting the work of all microorganisms, which contributes to supporting the quality and safety of blood transfusion for patients.

She stated that the Dubai Blood Donation Center is the first center in the country to obtain the accreditation of the American Blood Banks Association, as it obtained this international accreditation for the first time in 2012 thanks to the advanced technologies and smart services available in it, as it contributes to enabling it to provide the best services, which achieves the authority’s vision « Towards a healthier and happier society” and its strategy to make Dubai a leading destination for healthcare.

She pointed out that the authority has developed a system for donating blood, which is based on classifying donors according to five categories, according to the number of times they donate, so that it gives preferential advantages to donors who are most supportive of the blood bank, people of determination, and donors who are the fastest in responding to the authority's call to donate.

And she continued: “The card system includes different categories, graded according to the number of donation times for each person. There are blue cards, which belong to people who donated from 1 to 10 times, silver from 11 to 20 times, gold from 21 to 30 times, and platinum from 31 to 40 times. once, and pearls from 40 to 60 times.”
