A 19-year-old man from Southampton has been arrested and is in custody.

The Queen is celebrating Christmas in Windsor this year after canceling the traditional plans to go to Sandringham House in Norfolk.

- An investigation is underway after this incident and we are working with colleagues from the Metropolitan Police, says Superintendent Rebecca Mears, at the police in the Thames Valley.

She continues:

- The man has been arrested on suspicion of trespassing on a protected place and possession of an assault weapon.

He is still in custody.

Mears states that security routines were triggered immediately when the man entered the plot, but that he did not enter any buildings.

The alarm went off at 08.30 on Christmas morning, British time.

Windsor Castle is Britain's largest castle and one of the country's most famous, located just west of London near the town of Windsor in the county of Berkshire.
