The United Kingdom records more than 122,000 new cases of Covid-19

On Friday, the United Kingdom recorded 122,000 new cases of Covid-19, according to the daily report of the health authorities, in a new record number caused by the mutant Omicron.

The country, which is one of the countries most affected by the pandemic, recorded 137 additional deaths during the past 24 hours, bringing the number of deaths to 147,857 cases, in addition to 1171 hospitalizations, which represents an acceleration of infection.

Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland have tightened their health restrictions, which are due to come into effect after Christmas.

In England, Boris Johnson's government is trying to buy time, relying in particular on studies showing a lower incidence of hospitalizations with the Omicron mutant compared to its Delta-dominated counterpart until recently.

The Director-General of the British Health Security Agency, Dr. Jenny Harris, welcomed these studies as a "beacon of hope for Christmas", explaining that the authorities take into account in their decisions the impact of the epidemic on hospitals, but also on society as a whole, and in particular on the labor force.

In London, one in twenty people contracted Covid a week ago, according to estimates.

Many sectors were affected significantly, which led to the closure of companies and the cancellation of flights.
