The secretary general of the Japanese government, Hirokazu Matsuno, is careful not to qualify as a "boycott" the decision not to send ministers to the Winter Games in Beijing next February.

“

Japan believes it is important that China respects freedom, human rights and the rule of law,

” says Hirokazu Matsuno.

And to specify that the Japanese government chose to avoid "

 to use a particular expression

" concerning the presence of Japan at the Winter Games in China.

Moreover, he notes, the United States does not use the expression "

diplomatic boycott

 " in

its official announcement

.

On the other hand, Japan will send Seiko Hashimoto, president of the Organizing Committee for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics held last summer, as well as the president of the Japanese Olympic Committee Yasuhiro Yamashita, to Beijing.

Japan finally observes that China did not send a ministerial delegation to the Tokyo Summer Games either.

She was represented by the head of her Sports office.
