"Because of insults" .. the governor of Najaf submits his resignation from his position

Najaf Governor Louay al-Yasiri announced, on Friday, his resignation from his position, days after the leader of the Sadrist movement, Muqtada al-Sadr, threatened to dismiss him by "legal means."

Al-Yasiri said in a press conference held in Najaf that he will send an official letter to the Prime Minister, Mustafa Al-Kazemi, next Monday, containing a request for exemption from the position, provided that his first deputy, Hisham Al-Karaawi, will take over his duties as the city’s acting governor, until Al-Kazemi appoints another governor.

Al-Yasiri added that the decision to resign came after he had reached "a difficult psychological situation as a result of his and his family being insulted," noting that the decision to resign was "final."

Al-Yasiri denied being pressured by Al-Sadr to resign, saying, "I visited Al-Sadr and explained to him all the circumstances, and there was an understanding, and he never asked me to resign."

In response to al-Yasiri's move, al-Sadr issued a statement describing the resignation of the governor of Najaf as a "step in the right direction."

Al-Sadr called on the Iraqi government to "protect him and his family from any possible harm that might befall him, and to deal with the resignation in accordance with the law."

On Tuesday, al-Sadr said during a visit to the Najaf municipality building that he would work to dismiss the governor of Najaf through "legal and diplomatic means."

Al-Yasiri is the second Iraqi governor to resign after the governor of Dhi Qar, Ahmed Ghani al-Khafaji, who submitted his resignation on Thursday.
