Washington calls for an investigation into the crimes of rape of women in the Sudanese demonstrations

The US Embassy in Khartoum has called for a full and independent investigation into allegations of sexual violence and harassment of women, including rape, during recent protests in Sudan.

"Today, Sudanese women and their allies will take to the streets to demonstrate against the sexual violence and harassment, including rape, that occurred during the December 19 protests," the US Embassy said in a joint statement with the embassies of Canada, the European Union, Norway, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

These countries “strongly condemn the use of sexual and gender-based violence as a weapon to keep women away from the demonstrations and silence their voices,” calling on the authorities to “conduct a full and independent investigation into these allegations of violence and ensure that perpetrators are held accountable, regardless of their affiliation,” stressing that “there must be Sudanese are given the right to freedom of political expression and assembly free from violence.”
