The Ocean Viking, the SOS Mediterranean sea relief ship that picked up 114 stranded migrants off Libya a week ago, was still looking for a safe port to disembark them on Thursday.

"A week after their rescue, these survivors are still at sea without any certainty as to their disembarkation," said the Marseille-based NGO in a press release Thursday: and "despite the care provided by the Ocean Viking teams , the signs of fatigue, exhaustion and anxiety are increasing in those rescued ”.

"Winter climatic conditions at sea, cold and permanent humidity"

"The harsh winter weather conditions at sea, the cold and the permanent humidity to which they are exposed constitute additional difficulties", according to the NGO, which asks "the competent maritime authorities to assign without further delay a safe port where to disembark »The people rescued.

The Ocean Viking, chartered by SOS Méditerranée in partnership with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), rescued 114 people on December 16 who were on an inflatable boat in distress in international waters off Libya.

Among them are 72 men, 11 women and 31 minors, 27 of whom are unaccompanied.

Two newborns and a child under 4 are among the minors, detailed SOS Méditerranée.

Libya, an important crossing point despite insecurity

Despite persistent insecurity, Libya remains an important crossing point for tens of thousands of migrants seeking to reach Europe each year via the Italian coast, 300 km away.

According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), nearly 23,000 people have died or are missing in the Mediterranean since 2014, after trying to reach Europe, including nearly 1,700 since early 2021.
