The international award, which Alfred Nobel assigned 120 years ago to distinguished and creative people in various fields, and which was called the “Nobel Prize” was subjected to a long accumulation of negative practices, which led to the award being discontinued in 2018 and the Academy that grants it announcing “there is a crisis of confidence between the award and the reading public.” And the Academy formed a committee to discuss the crisis and identified new mechanisms on the basis of which it re-awarded the award in 2019. A recent book published in Cairo entitled “The Nobel Prize - A Crisis of Confidence”, by journalist and writer Azmi Abdel Wahab, monitored the course of these practices, and the book included a record of some Nobel laureates since Its establishment, the reasons for awarding them, and he stopped at important stations in their lives, political and social backgrounds, paradoxes, and situations that occurred with them.

The book noted that no Arab creator, except for Naguib Mahfouz, won the prize in the field of literature, in exchange for six prizes for Polish creators, the name of a poet was leaked from them before the awards were announced for the session in which she was chosen, and the prize in their case was just a "cat's claw" in The West’s struggle with the communist East, and the prize was awarded to the British politician Winston Churchill, who was never caught involved in literary writing, and to the Russian Pasternak, the author of the propaganda novel “Doctor Zhivago” against Russia, in which it was portrayed negatively. He also monitored the occurrence of a “sex scandal” that affected 18 A woman with the Swedish photographer Jean-Claude Arnault, and also monitored the fact that the award went to those who did not deserve it, such as the American singer Bob Dylan, and the writer wondered whether it was logical to accept the justification for awarding the award to Dylan as “creating poetic expressions in the traditions of (Noble)”, expressing his surprise by the fact that The terms have nothing to do with the award.

The book pointed out that the award has historically ignored great thinkers and innovators, such as the founder of psychology Sigmund Freud, who was on the lists of the award for 12 years, which ended with the committee writing under his evaluation form that “there is no need for a broader investigation into Freud’s issue as long as his works did not provide any scientific benefit.” It also ignored Tolstoy, Henrik Ibsen, Emil Zola, and Mark Twain, and notes that the General Union of Arab Writers and Writers welcomed in a 2018 statement the withholding of the award “if it takes advantage of the opportunity to re-prioritize the award and rid it of its political biases, which It led, among other things, to prevent Arab writers and poets from obtaining it, despite the high level of some Arab writings, and after it was obtained in recent years by unknown people who do not have literary production, in terms of quantity and quality that qualifies them to obtain the largest prize in the world.

In its introduction, the book noted the rejection of international writers for the award, such as; Bernard Shaw, who said, “I forgive Nobel for inventing dynamite, but I do not forgive him for inventing the Nobel Prize,” French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre, who called it a “political prize” and “new indulgences,” and Russian Boris Pasternak, who rejected the prize. For political reasons, the award-winning Latin American writer Gabriel García Márquez also questioned the award, noting that “the winners did not deserve the award like those who died and were not awarded.”

The book includes an overview of a large group of Nobel laureates, and provides a brief biography of each of them highlighting the most important features that distinguish them, such as Prudhomme, the architect of poetry, Theodor Maussen, the only historian to win the prize, Frederic Mistral, pioneer of French vernacular, and José Karoditch, who died after receiving the Nobel Kipling, the British Empire poet accused of supporting colonialism, Knuth Hamson who treated him as a shoemaker as a boy, Anatole France, enemy of the French Revolution, André Gide, a friend of Taha Hussein and the Arabs, and John Steinbeck, owner of The Grapes of the West, and friend of US President Johnson at the time.

The book revealed, in its special chapter on the international novelist Naguib Mahfouz, new secrets, including a blonde German attached to him and her attendance to visit him every year, and a French fan with whom her heart was attached a love letter to him on the back of a "train ticket" in France.
