In Taiwan, where same-sex marriage is legalized, a Japanese-Taiwan same-sex couple whose marriage registration was not accepted because of their nationality has decided to revoke the disposition and file a lawsuit in a Taiwanese court seeking permission to marry. ..

The complaints are made by a couple of men living in southern Taiwan, Eisaburo Ariyoshi (42) and Hitoshi Roh (34).

In 2019, Taiwan was the first in Asia to enact a law allowing same-sex marriage.

However, marriage was not permitted with people from countries where same-sex marriage was not legalized, such as Japan, and the marriage registration submitted by Mr. Ariyoshi and his colleagues to the local government in Taiwan was not accepted.

Regarding this, Mr. Ariyoshi and his colleagues revoked the disposition, saying that Japanese law that does not allow same-sex marriage should not be applied to Taiwan, and filed a lawsuit in Taiwan on the 23rd requesting the local government to accept the marriage registration. I decided to wake up.

According to the lawyers who support it, it is the first time for a Japanese person to file such a complaint in Taiwan.

Mr. Ariyoshi said, "When I was in Japan, same-sex marriage was not allowed and I had to give up my marriage. In Taiwan, I want to realize my dream of marrying a partner."

Experts working on support for sexual minorities pointed out that "if the complaint is approved, there will be cases where a Japanese spouse who has a same-sex marriage will not be recognized as a spouse as soon as they come to Japan." , May affect the discussion of same-sex marriage in Japan.
