The Christmas weeks are, together with the summer season, one of the most important times for the selective collection of glass containers.

During the months of December and January, approximately 20% of the total annual glass container waste is collected.

This translates to about eleven packages per citizen.

This is due in part to the fact that this time of year is a non-stop of festivities and, in Spain, celebrations tend to take place around a table or at the bar, with its consequent generation of waste.

In fact, the hospitality sector generates, on average,

52% of

single-use

packaging

that is placed on the market.

We have to stop extracting so much and we have to reinvest in nature

Dr. Bruno Oberle, IUCN Director General and Environmental Personality at the 2021 Ecovidrio Awards

Ecovidrio data confirm that citizens' commitment to the environment and recycling has been maintained even during the pandemic,

a time of great uncertainty

and health crisis. The truth is that more and more citizens understand that on these dates, when it is usual to go around wondering what the perfect gift can be, there is no better present than the one that everyone can enjoy: recycling glass containers is a very simple way to take care of yours and those to come.

The glass that is deposited in the green container is used to manufacture new ones, in this way

the consumption of natural raw materials

(sand, feldspars and limestone) and their extraction

is significantly reduced

, which helps to conserve natural resources and protect the ecosystems. As

Dr. Bruno Oberle

explained

at the last Ecovidrio Awards ceremony, where he was recognized as an

Environmental Personality

of 2021, "we have to stop extracting and we have to reinvest in nature."

The Director General of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is one of the world's leading experts on sustainable resource management and green economy. Also noteworthy is his work as president of the World Resources Forum to promote a fruitful dialogue between all the actors involved in the transition towards a greener, more resilient and low-carbon global society. Oberle warns that "

the impact of climate change is visible every year

> ", however, all is not lost because, as he points out, there are solutions:" To guarantee the transition towards a sustainable system we need union, alliances and that everyone gets on this boat.

The challenge is enormous and there is not much time left, but where there is a will, there is a way.

Together, we are going to take this path. "

Touch paddle

To give a boost to this challenge and get on the boat captained by Oberle this Christmas, Ecovidrio has launched different special initiatives for these important dates. One of them is the solidarity campaign

1kg of glass for 1kg of food

, for the benefit of the Spanish Federation of Food Banks (FESBAL). For every kilo of glass deposited in the 62 green containers distributed throughout the Community of Madrid during the first weeks of December, Ecovidrio has donated one kilo of food to the Food Bank.

In addition, the entity will install in different parts of Spain a four-meter high tree made up of

100 miniglous

(small containers to separate glass containers made from recycled material). The trees, located in places of great influx of cities such as Cartagena, Ávila, Fuengirola or El Prat de Llobregat, will be accompanied by an information stand in which environmental educators will inform citizens about the environmental benefits of recycling glass containers.

Precisely, the minigloos that shape these particular

Christmas fir trees

are another of Ecovidrio's proposals to encourage recycling in homes these holidays.

The iconic green container, in a mini format and with different designs, is the perfect gift for those who like to recycle in style.

In addition, with the purchase of a minigloo, different social causes will be supported, since the profits go to different foundations.

Thus, by adding the efforts of each other, we can all enjoy a more sustainable Christmas.
