Russia-Ukraine tensions: Washington dissatisfied with Moscow's demands

Tensions between Russia and Ukraine remain a sensitive subject in Washington.
Friday, December 17, Moscow unveiled its demands for a de-escalation.
Requirements, many of which are unacceptable, Washington believes.

Officially, the Americans prefer to wait before responding.
The only comments are therefore made under the seal of anonymity, a sign that Washington diplomats want to remain cautious and
avoid an escalation
.
But while members of the Biden administration say they are ready to talk, they believe many Russian demands are unacceptable.
"
The United States will not compromise the security of European countries,
" said a senior official.
In fact, Moscow notably calls for the withdrawal of all
NATO military installations
set up after 1997 in the countries of Eastern Europe.
Upcoming negotiations
"
There are other points on which we can discuss,
" added an American official, without giving more details.
But we know, for example, that Moscow and Washington were already discussing issues relating to armaments and military exercises.
The Americans say they are preparing their own list of proposals, in consultation with
their European allies
.
A list that they will send to the Russians during the week to pave the way for negotiations.
