The Chadian contingent is expected to almost double under the UN mandate.

The Malian ambassador to the UN has given the green light to the Security Council.

But the military government in power in Bamako wishes to specify that this reinforcement is intervening "

in a bilateral framework and at the request of the government of the Republic of Chad

 ", "

to face threats and protect its troops [...] in the north. of Mali, following the reconfiguration of the Barkhane force

, ”the French force in the Sahel, which withdrew 450 soldiers from northern Mali.

On the Chadian side, the Minister of Foreign Affairs confirms the upcoming dispatch of 1,000 soldiers to Mali.

But he stresses that neither the timetable nor the deployment zone are specified and that these details will be defined in agreement with the United Nations.

Heavy tribute

The Minusma had decided in June to reinforce its military personnel by 3,000 men, in the face of the resurgence of violence in central Mali.

It has 16,500 members including 11,000 soldiers across the country.

Chad has paid the heaviest price with 60 peacekeepers out of 159 in Mali, mostly in jihadist attacks.
