December 17, 2021 At least 22 people have died in Istanbul and another 16 have been hospitalized and are in serious condition after drinking contraband alcohol.

The local governor's office said, the CBS reports, adding the authorities have stepped up the crackdown on counterfeit drinks across Turkey ahead of the New Year celebrations.

Eleven dead and five of the people who were hospitalized were foreign nationals, the Istanbul governor's office said in a statement, without providing details on the nationalities of the victims.

Four suspects were arrested.

Authorities have launched a nationwide operation to crack down on the production of counterfeit alcohol, conducting raids on some 300 locations and seizing thousands of liters of counterfeit alcohol. At least 85 suspects were arrested.

Deaths from smuggled alcohol are not uncommon in Turkey, where people, faced with rising alcohol prices, try to buy cheaper drinks or consume home-made alcohol. Rising inflation and government taxes and regulation of alcohol consumption have pushed prices to all-time highs.

In India, deaths from illegally produced alcohol are also common because the poor cannot afford licensed brands from government-run stores.

In 2019, nearly 100 people died and around 200 were hospitalized after drinking contaminated liquor in two separate incidents in the country's northeast.
