• Twenty-five municipal police officers will arrive in 2022, assures the city of Nantes.

  • About thirty recruits arrived in 2021.

  • The reinforcements will help develop the night presence.

The account is not there yet, but we are getting closer. Twenty-five additional municipal police officers will be recruited in 2022, Nantes city hall announced on the sidelines of the city council on Friday. After the victorious municipal elections of June 2020, Johanna Rolland (PS) and her team had promised the creation of 70 police posts by the end of the new mandate (2020-2026). Twenty-nine positions arrived this year. The new wave of recruitment, which will be spread over the next twelve months, will therefore make it possible to reach a provisional total of 51 positions.

The recruits will help strengthen the presence of the police in the neighborhoods, but also at night.

Since June, the intervention hours of the Nantes municipal police have in fact been extended until 2 a.m. every Thursday and Friday, in the city center and around the Banana Hangar.

The rest of the time, the patrols previously ended at 11:45 p.m.

Twice a month since the summer, the municipal police also provide a permanent presence in the main squares in the city center.

The "mixed patrols" with the national police have also been stepped up and should increase in strength.

Around 30 additional CCTV cameras are also due to be installed over the next few months.

It won't be enough, worries the opposition

"Yes in Nantes, we take the subject of citizen security seriously", claims Pascal Bolo (PS), deputy mayor in charge of security.

He specifies that the city is experiencing "recruitment difficulties" in these highly demanded positions but that all 70 recruits should however be available in 2023, which will bring the total workforce to 185 municipal police officers.

However, this number is insufficient for the elected representatives of the opposition who claim roughly the double given the "growing insecurity".

It must be said that the subject remains one of the main concerns expressed by residents today.

The Interior Ministry Gerald Darmanin announced in May the creation of 70 additional national police officers in response to the promises of the town hall of Nantes.
