December 16, 2021 Italy obtained a new prestigious recognition from Unesco this morning, thanks to the inscription of the "Truffle hunting and quarrying in Italy: traditional knowledge and practices" in the Representative List of

Intangible Cultural Heritage

. The proclamation took place during the sixteenth session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, underway in Paris (13-18 December 2021).   



Minister Di Maio expresses great satisfaction with the decision of the Committee, which recognizes the value of an extraordinary wealth of traditional knowledge and practices transmitted orally in the countryside of many regions of our country. The new registration leads to

the number of Italian elements registered in the List of Intangible Heritage, out of a total of more than 600. After the registration last summer of the Porticoes of Bologna, of the pictorial cycles of the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua, of Montecatini Grande SPA of Europe in the List of UNESCO World Heritage Sites and after the election, on November 25, of our country to the World Heritage Committee of the Organization, the result further confirms the leading position that Italy holds within UNESCO and the excellent teamwork of the country system, which involved, together with the Farnesina, the Permanent Representation of Italy to UNESCO, the Italian National Commission for UNESCO,the Ministry of Culture and a wide range of local entities that have promoted the candidacy, including the National Federation of Italian Truffles (FNATI) and the National Association of Truffle Cities

, after "Truffle hunting and quarrying in Italy: traditional knowledge and practices" was officially registered in the Unesco list of intangible cultural heritage. It is a recognition to be proud of, because the white truffle represents Tuscan excellence, and at the same time it is a recognition of the quarryman-dog couple, custodian of the territory and symbol of the perfect symbiosis between man and nature ". Thus the Prime Minister regional, Antonio Mazzeo, commented on the UNESCO recognition of the 'search and quarrying' activity that rewards some territories of the region.
