Good evening,

a hundred days - we think a new coalition should be given that much time to prove itself. An alliance of four made up of the Greens, SPD, FDP and Volt has ruled the Römer since September; so the time is up. The coalition agreement is ambitious and a promise to the citizens. But can the department heads also meet the high expectations? We dare to take stock of each department. Not all department heads have taken on their dossiers again. For example, the longtime head of the environment department is now also the head of the climate protection department, well. A Herculean task lies ahead of Rosemarie Heilig (The Greens) if the city wants to achieve its goal of being climate neutral by 2035. Heilig looks determined to roll up his sleeves, writes Mechthild Harting. Whether or not the change of course is successful is not just down to Heilig. "It only works together",she says and means politics, city administration and citizenship. In this respect, there will still be a great deal to be observed here - beyond the first hundred days. Manfred Köhler also comments that in the course of the previous efforts of the new coalition, the divergence of the city and its surrounding area is increasing. But is that good for the climate? Doubts are in order.

“You can't cancel Carnival!” Is how our Mainz correspondent Markus Schug begins his text - probably also to encourage himself. After all, like Christmas and Easter, at least in Mainz this date is a permanent fixture in the annual calendar. However, as expected, the Mainz Carneval Association (MCV) called off the next Rose Monday procession, which should actually have been celebrated on February 28, 2022, the highest fools holiday, after consulting the board. The current Corona regulation of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate currently only allows large outdoor events with a maximum of 10,000 visitors. And in view of the barely controllable infection rate, not much will change even if the situation improves by the beginning of 2022. Corona is annoying, also here. But,see above, Carnival itself cannot be canceled.

I beg your pardon for the tough change of subject that has now followed. Unfortunately, it cannot be prevented that carnival is also mentioned here, but also that everyone who was and is affected may never again be able to celebrate carnival carefree: The accused is in the process of the attack on the carnival procession in the north Hessian town of Volkmarsen sentenced to life imprisonment. On Thursday, the Kassel regional court found Maurice P. guilty of attempted murder in 89 cases, of dangerous bodily harm and dangerous interference with road traffic. “Planned, conscious and wanted” the then 29-year-old Maurice P. drove to the carnivalists and spectators on Shrove Monday 2020, said the presiding judge Volker Mütze. Maurice P. drove his car into the train with the "sure knowledge and will",that people can be killed in the process. The question arises: why? To this end, the judge has his own attempt at interpretation, as Matthias Trautsch reports from Kassel. But one does not know the exact details, because the accused was always silent.

And the longest serving Prime Minister of the republic will be 70 years old on Saturday.

Now the Hessian CDU is hoping for a signal from him: Will Volker Bouffier also lead them into the state elections in 2023?

+++ the vaccination center at the Frankfurt trade fair is now making a supplementary offer because the demand for vaccinations for younger children between five and eleven years of resident paediatricians exceeds the supply +++ the federal prosecutor's office almost two years after the racially motivated attack in Hanau the investigation stopped.

Stay healthy and confident in spite of everything

The tip for the weekend

"There are tables, there is a bar, there are cocktails and cold beer, plus Frankfurt cuisine" - that's how laconically Norman Holub describes his restaurant "Vadder". Solid and imaginative, never fallen for it. This success with the public shines all the brighter because there are many places with little memorable dishes all around. Holub, on the other hand, brings a very own, carefully put together and prepared mixture of home-style, Mediterranean and international dishes to your plate. There should be such corner bars more often.
