Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti), Vice-President of the Sudanese Sovereignty Council, announced the suspension of the "Eastern Sudan Track" agreement, signed within the Juba Peace Agreement, until "the people of the East agree", after consulting with government parties and mediation.

Hemedti added that the crisis in eastern Sudan will be fully resolved in the coming period through a comprehensive conference of the parties to the crisis in the east of the country.

The Sovereignty Council decided to form a committee to redress the harm of the people of the East.

It is noteworthy that "the eastern path is an agreement signed between the government and two factions in eastern Sudan, namely the opposition Beja Congress and the Popular Front for Peace, Liberation and Justice."

The agreement stipulates that the two factions will be represented by 30% in the executive and legislative authority in the region, but it has not been implemented so far.

Hemedti said, "The path of eastern Sudan, which was signed in the Juba Peace Agreement, has been suspended until the people of the east agree, after consulting with the government parties and mediation."

"A higher committee has been formed from the people of Sudan to redress the damage, and its work will start soon to contain the eastern crisis," he added, without specifying a date.

The Supreme Council of Beja Opticals (tribal) had approved on the fourth of this December a government request to postpone the closure of Port Sudan port and the national road linking Khartoum and Port Sudan until the 19th of the same month.

And yesterday, Wednesday, the Council threatened to return the closures after the deadline expired next Sunday, unless the demands of the residents of eastern Sudan were met.

The council implements these closures in protest of what it describes as the developmental marginalization of the region's residents.

binding agreement

For his part, the National Security Adviser of South Sudan, Tut Gallwak, said that problems still exist in reaching a solution to the issue of eastern Sudan.

Galwak, who headed the delegation of the Juba negotiations between the Sudanese parties, explained that he sat with all the signatories and non-signatories in order to discuss the peace agreement to find solutions to the current problems in the region.

He stressed that the peace agreement signed in Juba is binding on all parties, and that the government of South Sudan is working to support and stabilize Sudan.

As for the overseer of Beja and the independent amoudis in eastern Sudan, Muhammad al-Amin Turk, he said that the decision to suspend the eastern Sudan route contributes to unifying the residents of the region with all their components, and added that he supports the decision.
