The omicron mutant could become the most prevalent in Europe by January

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Wednesday that the number of people infected with the Omicron mutant is currently doubling every two to three days, and this strain is expected to become the most prevalent in Europe next month.

"Scientists expect the Omicron to become the most common strain in most European countries in January ... which is concerning," von der Leyen told the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

She stated that 66% of the European population - representing 300 million people - has now been fully vaccinated, and that 62 million people have been given booster doses.

She stressed that this represented the best possible protection against Omicron at the moment.

The former doctor said that the vaccination rate around the world reached 44%.
