Italy restricts entry to travelers from the European Union
Italy tightened the conditions of access to the country for
travelers from the European Union
(EU), requiring a mandatory negative test for all and a five-day quarantine for those not vaccinated.
The decree, effective as of Thursday, was signed by the
Minister of Health, Roberto Speranza
.
The authorities request "the mandatory presentation of a negative test upon leaving one's country for all persons arriving from the
countries of the European Union,
" explained a spokesperson.
Until now, EU
citizens
could travel to Italy with the health passport that certifies that they underwent the full cycle of vaccination, or that they had
recently passed the Covid or a negative test.
Unvaccinated individuals must observe
a five-day quarantine upon arrival
, in addition to submitting a negative test.
Those who come from outside the EU must also comply with a quarantine.
These new measures,
valid until January 31
, were adopted due to the new wave of covid-19, marked by a rapid spread of the omicron variant.
According to recent studies, this variant could be more resistant to vaccines and is more transmissible than the delta variant, which is detected in most cases of coronavirus in the world.
Italy, which has paid a heavy price with more than
133,000 deaths since the start of the pandemic
, recorded more than 20,000 new infections and 120 deaths on Tuesday.
