New popular demonstrations against the military coup took place this Monday, December 13 in Sudan, for the eighth time since October 25.

The street does not release the pressure on Abdallah Hamdok, maintained in his post as head of government by the military.

A Prime Minister who, despite the dispute and the close surveillance of the army, continues to strive to govern.

Abdallah Hamdok

is not a career politician.

But he knows the weight of strong gestures in politics, such as the replacement he ordered on Sunday of all the governors appointed since the

coup by the military

.

The Prime Minister intends to show that he governs and that he has room for maneuver.

In November, he had already sacked the chief of police and his deputy, after the violent repression of peaceful demonstrations, then frozen or canceled appointments in the administration of loyalists of former President Omar al-Bashir.

On the other hand, he still has not formed this government of "

technocrats

" provided for in the agreement signed with the putschists.

And his entourage continues to indicate that he could

resign in case of failure

.

New government announced at the end of consultations

According to the head of the local UN mission, Volker Perthes, Abdallah Hamdok is currently discussing with the military the reforms necessary to put in place new transitional institutions.

His government team should be announced after the end of these consultations.

Researcher Maram Mahdi, of the Institute for Security Studies in Pretoria, says her main challenge is to find ministers who are not close to the old regime or the military, "

given that the same small elite has controlled political space for decades

 ”.
